2015 Club Elections & Upcoming Meeting

Looking forward to 2015, our club elections are coming up at our February meeting. If you are interested in running for one of our 4 elected officer positions, please be sure to submit your Intent to Run on or before our January meeting. This must be a one page document listing the office being sought, your qualifications for this office, and why you should be elected to that position. In order to run for office, you must be an active member who is:

- a registered Republican under 40

- a resident of Kings County, NY

- a member in good standing having paid annual dues

- a member having not missed 3 or more consecutive meetings

 

The letter of intent can be sent to our club email, bklynyrs@gmail.com, or handed to/emailed to any member of the Election Committee (comprised of Diana Sepulveda, Gene Berardelli and Jacob Bard) before the start of our January meeting. If you have any questions about the election process, please do not hesitate to reach out to me at the email address above.

 

As a reminder, our next Brooklyn YRs meeting will be on January 20th, 2015 at 8 pm.

At this meeting, we will be having mock debates where members of our club will take the pro and con stances on several issues and the audience will provide feedback for debating skills. The topics available for debate are the following:

- Gay Marriage

- Obama's Immigration Executive Order

- Bipartisanship in 2015 Congress

- America's role in the Middle East

- Race in America after Ferguson/Staten Island Grand Jury verdicts

The agenda for the meeting will include a post-election wrap up, discussions about our upcoming Holiday social, and information about our club elections to take place in February.

 

We will also be collecting unwrapped toys for children of soldiers of a local Army National Guard unit. They are looking for toys for children up to 12 years old, with a focus on infants and todlers. If you are not able to attend this meeting and would still like to donate a toy, please email bklynyrs@gmail.com to make arrangements.

Tickets for Active Members are $100 and College Members are $75.

Petition Season

Petition Season is upon us. Whether this is your first time collectiong signatures or you 20th, candidates need our help to get on the ballot in November. Candidates in both Brooklyn and Staten Island have asked the YRs for our support in their petition efforts.

 

Our own YR Bill Davidson, candidate for State Assembly for AD 50 covering Greenpoint and Williamsburg, needs our help with petitioning. The YRs will be holding 2 official petition blitz days, Sunday June 8th and Saturday June 21st. Please mark those dates on your calendars and email bklynyrs@gmail.com if you can attend either or both of those petition dates. If you want additional information about how to help out Bill, feel free to reach out to him directly, or to Diana Sepulveda.

 

In addition, a friend of our club, Joe Tirone Jr., candidate for State Assembly for AD 63 in Staten Island, has asked for our help with petitioning as well. For more information, please email bklynyrs@gmail.com.

National Military Appreciation Month

 

National Military Appreciation Month (NMAM) is celebrated every May and is a declaration that encourages U.S. citizens to observe the month in a symbol of unity, to honor the current and former members of the U.S. Armed Forces, including those who have died in the pursuit of freedom. The Brooklyn Young Republicans ask all our club members, friends and family to remember our veterans and current Armed Forces members who have protected our freedoms.

About: A remembrance of our veterans. It commemorates the men and women who died while in military service.

Russell has contributed much time and effort into our club & the Republican Party, and has always gone above & beyond the call of duty to support Republican ideals. He is very worthy of this honor, and we are thrilled to be awarding him with this distinction.

We would like to thank all those who took part in the voting process this year. We would also like to mention that the runners-up for the award - Thomas Brice, Vito DiGiovanni, and William P. O'Neil III - are all assets to our YR club and are appreciated for their contributions.

The YR of the Year award will be handed out at the Brooklyn Republican Party's 2014 Lincoln Day Celebration this Spring. As more information about this celebration becomes available, it will be posted on this website.

We will also be voting on Brooklyn YR of the Year. Past recipients of this award were Gene Berardelli and Diana Sepulveda. Nominations are currently open and can be submitted via email to bklynyrs@gmail.com. Nominations will also be accepted from the floor of our next meeting before voting begins.

We are currently accepting nominations for Brooklyn Young Republican of the Year 2013-2014. Past winners of this award were Gene Berardelli and Diana Sepulveda.

 

Nominations will be accepted beginning now via email to bklynyrs@gmail.com and will continue through the end of our next club meeting (Wednesday April 16th at 8pm at Brookyln GOP Headquarters). All nominations submitted via email or from the floor of our next meeting will be considered for voting.

 

Voting will take place at the next club meeting and will also be open via email for several days after the meeting for those who were not able to attend.

 

Please remember that only members in good standing are eligible for nomination and to vote. If you are unsure of your status as a member (must have paid your 2014 dues and attended 2 meetings), please reach out to Diana Sepulveda, President, at the email address above.

Open Letter to Brooklyn YRs

Please see below a letter that I sent to the New York State Young Republicans today.....

New York State Young Republican Governing Board,

 

Please let this email serve as my immediate resignation as Chair of the New York State Young Republicans.

I have come to the realization that I do not share the vision nor the direction this Board is going in and cannot continue in the capacity of Chair. 

 

A phrase we have used during campaign season in Brooklyn was “never lose sight of the house.” There have been times recently where I feel members in this organization have lost sight of what we are here to do. Our Founders did not intend for us to have the highest bank balance or hand out the most awards. I encourage everyone to re-read our incorporation documents to ensure that this organization is always mindful of our Founders’ intent.

Local clubs are the heart of our organization; I am fortunate to be president of one of the best in the state. If they feel unwanted, if they fall apart, if they feel we are not a benefit to them, then we cease to be a positive force and in some ways stunt their growth. Our goals should always focus on ensuring that local clubs thrive in their counties. They are the current and future leaders of our organization & our party and without them, New York will turn even more blue in years to come.

Thank you for the opportunity to serve in your organization over the past few years. I will be available during the transition process with my experience and documents that I will hand over to the next Chair.
